From Newborough to Traralgon, the award winning coffee shop expanding in Gippsland
Danbo's Coffee has opened a second location and locals can't get enough of their pastries and sweets.

Danbo’s Coffee opened its Newborough store in 2020, and last year it was voted Latrobe Valley’s most popular coffee shop by the local business chamber’s People’s Choice Awards.
Locals can’t get enough of Danbo’s coffee, pastries and sweet treats – so much so that owner Daniel Chessels has opened a second store in Traralgon.
The Gippsland Monitor visited the shop in Newborough to see what all the fuss was about.
Light and bright
When you first walk into Danbo’s Coffee, you’re met with a delightfully light, airy space that feels miles apart from the dark, cosy vibes many coffee shops go for. With plants along each wall and two air conditioning units to beat the heat, this shop is a breath of fresh air, perfect for starting the day ahead or relaxing with friends over lunch.
Extra cheese please
Staff say popular menu items include lattes, smoothies and Rueben sandwiches.
“The ham and cheese croissant is a staple in my diet,” one customer told us, while another said a large flat white was their go-to.
Among my favourites was the cheese and tomato toasted sandwich, which came extra cheesy on request.

The cafe uses beans from Fat Cat Coffee Roasters, another business owned by Chessels. The cappuccino wasn’t overly sweet or bitter; the profile was smooth and rich.

This custard and apricot danish came with a dusting of icing sugar, and offered a combination of flaky pastry with a soft, gooey centre.
