Long weekend tragedy after three people swept off rocks at San Remo

Bass Coast Shire said “conditions can change rapidly and become dangerous without warning”.

A woman died on Friday morning after being swept off Punchbowl Rocks at San Remo, while a 41-year-old man remains missing after emergency services were unable to locate him.

Two women and a man were washed off rocks at the beach off Punch Bowl Road on Friday morning. Emergency services were called to the area around 8:30am.

One woman was able to swim back to shore. The second woman was located with the assistance of the Air Wing and transported back to shore, but she was unable to be revived.

Emergency services concluded the search for the 41-year-old man on Monday afternoon.

“Our hearts go out to the family and friends of those involved in this terrible incident,” said Bass Coast Mayor, Rochelle Halstead, in a statement. “This is an unimaginable loss, and on behalf of Council and the wider Bass Coast community, I offer our heartfelt condolences during this incredibly difficult time.”

Bass Coast Shire described Punchbowl Rocks as “a rugged and remote section of coastline, and Council echoes the advice of emergency services in urging caution around coastal rock platforms, where conditions can change rapidly and become dangerous without warning”.
